Travel by train is slow, but trains are inexpensive, and they run frequently and are usually more reliable in the winter than air travel. Ukrainian Railways operates an efficient system with routes that are extensive, providing connections between most cities and towns, although you should not expect great comfort. Many journeys can be booked on an overnight basis, but most trains do not have sleeping cars. Travelers should purchase tickets in advance through In-tourist Travel agents in their own country, since buying them once in country is difficult and frustrating. Be sure to bring your own food; service (and sometimes heat) can be spotty, even when traveling first class. Ukrainian Railways has a website, but only in Russian.
